Welding & Machining COVID-19 FAQ (3/27/20 @ 7:30pm)
When will labs resume?
Labs for some specific classes are tentatively authorized to resume on April 13th. The situation is evolving and this could change. Due to the distancing requirements to prevent the potential transmission of COVID-19 it is taking some time to organize what classes will be offered in-person. You will receive an email the week of March 30th detailing our plan.
When will classes resume?
Classes will resume ONLINE on March 30th. If you are registered in a course with a lecture component, that portion of the class will continue through the Canvas learning management system.

How long will we be doing the online classwork?
The remainder of the semester.
Will we have to login online at the same time our classes are usually held?
Most classes will be “asynchronous” which means you will complete the assignments and quizzes at your own pace (but prior to deadlines). We may be offering WELD 118 – Blueprint Reading synchronously which means you will video conference in via your computer (or phone even) for lecture at a predetermined time. We will have more details this week.
Is all the work I have put in this semester wasted?
No! You are able to complete the lecture and class coursework, online. Should Labs not be permitted for the rest of the semester, or in a timeframe that leaves enough time to complete your lab coursework, students completing the lecture portion of the class will have the opportunity to be issued an "Incomplete" and make up lab hours during the next semester (scheduled with your instructor).
We recognize that the hands-on portion of these classes is crucial to your future success and will schedule the same, if not more, lab time at a future date.
What does an “Incomplete” do my GPA?
Taking an “incomplete” has no affect on your GPA, it only delays when you receive your final grade (once you complete the missing components)
If I am graduating in May will I still have to take an incomplete if the labs don't open?
Yes, to graduate you need to complete the labs so you have fulfilled the requirements of the class. We may still be able to offer labs this semester, we are just waiting as to when.
If we take an “incomplete”, do we need to re-register to make up lab hours and will we get priority registration?
We will have to schedule when you complete your labs, but I can assure you that students that have to complete labs due to their classes being interrupted will receive priority.
Will we have to make up all the lab time for the semester or just what we missed?
The labs you would need to complete would only be the portion that you missed.
If online learning isn’t my thing when should I drop?
In order to receive an “incomplete” you must complete the online portion. If you do not want to do the online classwork and want to retake the course you can EW drop now. I would recommend waiting to drop until April 17th to see if we can offer labs by that time (you must stay current with the online component up to then however to be eligible for an “incomplete”)
How do I drop a class?
Excused Withdrawal (EW). For a variety of reasons, students may not be able to complete a course in an online format. Students may file a petition for an excused withdrawal for one or more courses. The form is attached. We received confirmation from the Chancellor's Office that colleges may refund fees, including student enrollment fees, if a student needs to withdraw due to an epidemic or other extraordinary conditions. The College won't record any withdrawal or grade on the transcript of a student who withdraws under these circumstances. A withdrawal due to extraordinary conditions (EW) won't affect a student’s academic progress, academic probation or ability to repeat a course. An "EW" grade will NOT affect the California College Promise Grant (formerly called the BOG fee waiver), but may affect a student's federal financial aid award. Please encourage students to email the Financial Aid office at financialaid@shastacollege.edu to discuss their individual circumstances.
How can I get my personal belongings?
Currently the campus is closed to all student access. If you are in dire need of equipment or personal items stored in a locker contact jdavis@shastacollege.edu.
How do we contact Admissions & Records?
Students can call the main A&R line, 530-242-7650. Leave a message and someone will get back with you. Please be patient as they work through these messages.
Can I come on campus?
Not at this time.
How does this affect Summer and Fall classes?
Based on the current outlook we feel confident that the Fall schedule will be relatively unimpacted by the closure. Summer courses may be impacted depending on the length of campus closure for multiple reasons.

Welding is playing an important role in the expansion and production of our industrial society. Over 50% of our GNP is directly or indirectly a result of welding technology. Without welding, industry and construction would never be able to meet consumer demands for new and better products. New products require new techniques. Traditional welding methods and training cannot meet this increased demand, and because of this, new welding processes have been developed. Presently, there are more than fifty welding processes being used in the industry. With each new process that is developed, there is a corresponding need for additional well-trained and well-qualified workers.
